180-Gallon Aquarium Stand

A TIG-welded aluminum stand designed for a acrylic aquarium, a second tank, filtration equipment, and storage.

I built the stand after I could not find a commercial option that matched the aquarium, room, equipment layout, and appearance I wanted. The structure supports a 6 x 2 x 2 foot main tank, a 30-gallon aquarium below, and the canister filters, wiring, heaters, and lighting cords.

Why I built it

The project began with a used 180-gallon acrylic aquarium. I sanded and polished the tank to restore its viewing surfaces, then designed a stand for its specific location in the house.

I chose aluminum over steel primarily for weight and corrosion resistance. Aquarium equipment inevitably lives around moisture, and the lighter frame was easier to handle during fabrication and installation while still providing a large practical strength margin for the intended load.
